World on the Move

A Traveling Exhibition from the American Anthropological Association and the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage

Migration is one of the most ancient and universal human experiences.

This groundbreaking exhibition invites visitors to explore 250,000 years of human movement—across continents, across cultures, and across time. From early human dispersal out of Africa to modern stories of displacement and adaptation, World on the Move reveals how migration shapes who we are, how we live, and how we connect.

Why do people move? How does it change us?

Through personal narratives, interactive media, and archaeological, biological, and cultural perspectives, this exhibit challenges common assumptions and opens space for dialogue. Visitors are encouraged to reflect on their own family stories, and to consider migration not as a problem to be solved, but as a human reality to be understood.
